Closeup view of moss with sporophytes, which appear as long stems with bright green capsules at their tips.

Our mostly mild, wet February has prompted a burst of new energy among the mosses. Their sporophytes are pushing up, each long stem topped with a capsule, getting ready to burst open and release the spores carrying the next generation.

When I captured the image above, the bright green baubles of the sporophytes were still intact, and pretty enough to lure me down to ground level for a closer look. The hard part was getting my aging body back up again afterwards. If only I could spring up as energetically as the moss!

Front cover of Encounters With the Natural World

I’m very excited to have completed a project I undertook over a year ago: a 256-page book of the stories and photos originally published in this blog.

Knowing more about photo processing now than back in 2011, when I began the blog, I’ve updated virtually all of the 400+ photos and many of the stories.  The print quality is excellent and the book looks terrific. The print copy is pricier than I would wish, but the PDF version is affordable. And you can even flip through the whole of the “Preview” online to see what the printed book looks like. Click on the cover image to check it out.

    Hi Laurie
Tried to reply in your blog, being a techie genius, couldn’t figure out how to forward it.
I’ve enjoyed and perused Encounters many times, each time finding something magical and feel good in your beautiful photographs and accompanying comments. Should become a best seller. Thank you for sending Gordie and me a copy. Leona
